Pajaro Valley Unified School District Healthy Start Program - $1,000 to provide replacement eyeglasses to students in need.

United Way of Santa Cruz County - $2,000 in support of the Community Assessment Project, a biannual study conducted county-wide to gather data regarding a number of community indicators, such as health, safety and the environment.

Oral Health

Dientes Community Dental Care -$10,000to support the delivery of dental services for low-income adults from the Pajaro Valley.

Regional Oral Health Collaborative - $10,000 to support the implementation of the Santa Cruz County Dental Affinity Program.

Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency - $10,000 in support of the Happy Tooth Program for preschool children in the Pajaro Valley.

Salud Para La Gente - $10,000 to support the expansion of dental care services to children from the Migrant Education Program at the Pajaro Valley Unified School District’s Children’s Resource Center. 

Diabetes and Contributing Factors (Healthy Lifestyles RFP) —
$65,000 to the following organizations:

Above the Line - $5,000 to support the Above the Line Organic Garden Project to promote healthy eating and regular physical activity through an organic gardening and culinary arts program.

Center for Community Advocacy - $7,500 to support the Promotores Comunitarios Program, a peer-to-peer farmworker health promotion program based on training local volunteer leaders to conduct home- and community-based health interventions in their respective neighborhoods.

Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast - $8,000 to support the Uniquely Me! ¡Nadie Como Yo! Program that will provide after school programs that address healthy eating and exercise habits for Latinos at low-income housing facilities in Watsonville.

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte - $9,500 to implement the Teen Success Nutrition Series aimed at reducing obesity and diabetes risk among pregnant and parenting teens.

Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center (Head Start Program) -- $13,000 to implement the Healthy Beginnings Program, a nutrition and physical activity program for Head Start children and their families with the goal of preventing childhood obesity and promoting life long health.

Santa Cruz Office of Education (Watsonville Community School) - $12,000 to support Martial Arts Fitness at Watsonville Community School.  Martial Arts Fitness blends the philosophies, movements and practical aspects of the martial arts with the fundamental principles of fitness, nutrition and physical health.

Second Harvest Food Bank - $10,000 to support the Youth & Low-Income Families Farmers’ Market Access Project, designed to promote healthy eating habits among low-income youth and their families with a special emphasis on fresh, locally grown produce at the Watsonville Farmers’ Market. 

Health Insurance/Coverage & Education on Using the System

Healthy Kids of Santa Cruz County - $20,000 to provide access to health insurance to children in the Pajaro Valley who have incomes at or below 300% of the federal poverty level.

Hospice Caring Project - $5,000 to support the Implementing Change Initiative to bridge access barriers to end-of-life hospice, transitions, and grief support by providing effective, culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach and education to the Latino community in Santa Cruz County.

Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County - $3,000to institute a six-week unit “Accessing Health Care” into the Survival English Curriculum.  Students learn vocabulary and practice such skills as: selecting a non-ER doctor, speaking to health providers, making an appointment, and more.

Promoting Entry and Advancement in the Health Professions

Watsonville High School Health Careers Academy - $7,000 for enhancement of its program that provides a specialized course of study for those high school students interested in entering the health professions.

Aptos High School, Cabrillo College, Pajaro Valley High School, Watsonville Adult Education, Watsonville High School $7,000 in scholarships for Pajaro Valley residents pursuing careers in the health professions.

Spring 2007

Diabetes and Contributing Factors (Healthy Lifestyles RFP) – $75,000 to the following organizations:

Central Coast Alliance for Health — $10,500 to support the Provider Training: Healthy Lifestyles for Kids project which will train 100 Pajaro Valley providers in standardized practices of identification, intervention and treatment of children who are at 85% BMI or greater. 

Life Lab Science Program — $15,280 to support the Plant It, Grow It, Eat It! program which will work to improve the health of Pajaro Valley children through the use of school gardens.

Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes — $2,000 to implement a parent nutrition education program and to evaluate the nutrition education and produce distribution partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank.

Pajaro Valley Prevention & Student Assistance — $7,570 to implement the “Super-Savvy Youth” media literacy project.  This project will provide hands-on media literacy workshops to local youth in order to increase their awareness of food industry marketing and advertising messages that promote unhealthy eating and unrealistic body images.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District Healthy Start Program — $2,650 to implement a Diabetes Teen Support Group at Watsonville High School. 

Second Harvest Food Bank — $12,000 to implement a project that will promote long term healthy eating habits by educating young people and Pajaro Valley food stamp recipients about the benefits of purchasing fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at the Watsonville Farmers’ Market. 

Strategic Health Communications — $15,000 to support the ENRG Campaign, a comprehensive childhood obesity prevention campaign utilizing peer education, social marketing, media, and community events to educate and mobilize teen involvement. 

Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County — $10,000 to develop and implement nutrition curriculum in which students learn the vocabulary and skills to select and prepare healthy food for their families and reduce the risk of diabetes.

Girl Scouts of Monterey Bay - $5,500 to support Girl Scouts activities focusing on healthy lifestyles with a special emphasis on nutrition and exercise at three elementary schools, one middle school, and one low-cost apartment complex in the Pajaro Valley.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District Healthy Start Program - $10,000 to continue a program that will establish healthy eating habits and increase physical activity levels in kindergarten and first grade children and their families in order to prevent the development of obesity and related health problems.

Salud Para la Gente, Inc. - $15,000 for dental services and dental health prevention and education outreach to uninsured adults in the Pajaro Valley.

Healthy Lifestyles for P.V. Youth RFP
– $65,500 to the following organizations:

Center for Community Advocacy - $5,575 to incorporate healthy lifestyle education into their existing Promotores de Salud program to decrease the incidence of obesity amongst the farmer worker population.

La Manzana Community Resources - $5,575 to implement a new pilot program that will provide healthy, nutritious afternoon snacks on a year-round basis to youth at local community program sites that also participate in the Summer Lunch Program.

Life Lab Science Program - $14,480 for the Plant It, Grow It, Eat It! program which will work to improve the health of Pajaro Valley children through development of a pilot program to increase nutrition education through use of school gardens.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District Healthy Start Program - $10,000 to continue a program that will establish healthy eating habits and increase physical activity levels in kindergarten and first grade children and their families in order to prevent the development of obesity and related health problems.

Population Services International - $15,000 for the NutritionAID Peer Education Project an adolescent peer education program about healthy eating and physical activity that includes peer-to-peer workshops, a local promotional campaign and school and community events for teens.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz & San Benito Counties - $14,870 to increase the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables at the Watsonville Farmers Market by food stamp recipients through simplified transactions and enhanced marketing.

Youth, Ages 6-21

Cabrillo College Foundation - $500 to the Betsy McCarty Scholarship Fund.

Healthy Kids of Santa Cruz County - $20,000 to provide insurance for the children of Pajaro Valley farm workers with incomes at or below 300% of the federal poverty level.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District Healthy Start Program – $1,000 direct grant for provision of replacement eyeglasses for students in need.

Watsonville High School Health Careers Academy (Pajaro Valley Unified School District) – $8,500 direct grant for expansion & enhancement of program to include more offsite trips to universities & conferences, for purchase of needed medical equipment needed for vocational training classroom and for support of the mentoring program.

United Way of Santa Cruz County Go for Health Collaborative – $10,000 direct grant to support the work of the collaborative toward eliminating childhood obesity in Santa Cruz County.

Youth Resource Bank - $20,000 direct grant for Healthy Families to provide access to health care for farm worker families by provision of Healthy Families Premium scholarships. (reallocated from returned Healthy Kids grant)

Healthy Lifestyles for P.V. Youth RFP – $46,500 to the following organizations:

Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County, Youth Community Restoration Program - $12,500 to introduce nutritional information, healthy eating practices and exercise activities into YCORP's three existing intervention programs.

Community Bridges, La Manzana Community Resources - $10,000 for the Summer Lunch "Active Play!" Project which will enhance Summer Lunch site activities to include nutrition education and hands-on physical activities.

Girl Scouts of Monterey Bay - $6,000 to support Girl Scout activities focusing on health, nutrition and sports activities at 7 elementary school sites and one housing complex throughout the Pajaro Valley.

Mid-Peninsula Housing Services Corporation - $3,000 for the Child & Youth Eating and Physical Activity Initiative which will incorporate healthy lifestyle education and activities into summer youth programs in the San Andreas Community.

Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance, Inc. - $5,000 for program to encourage at-risk youth to engage in healthy activities through the provision of mountain biking and camping experiences.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District Healthy Start Program - $10,000 to institute a program that will establish healthy eating habits and increase physical activity levels in kindergarten and first grade children and their families in order to prevent the development of obesity and related health problems.

Oral Health Initiative:

Salud Para La Gente, Inc. – $25,499 for dental services at the PVUSD Children's Resource Center.  ($20,000 reallocated from returned Dientes! Grant + $5,499 regranting from the City of Watsonville)

Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency – $30,000 to coordinate a Comprehensive Perinatal Services (CPSP), provider-based oral health education/disease prevention project in Pajaro Valley.

Cabrillo College Career Advancement Program – $9,000 direct grant in support of in support of a Summer Institute for Pajaro Valley middle children focused on health careers.

Watsonville High School Health Careers Academy (Pajaro Valley Unified School District) – $7,000 direct grant for expansion and enhancement of their program to include more offsite trips to medical schools and universities, for purchase of needed medical equipment needed for vocational training classroom and for support of the mentoring program.

Watsonville High School (Pajaro Valley Unified School District), Aptos High School (Pajaro Valley Unified School District), Cabrillo College - $39,000 in scholarships was awarded to Pajaro Valley youth pursuing careers in the health professions.

Farm Workers and Their Families:

Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County – $20,000 direct grant for Healthy Kids Santa Cruz to provide insurance for the children of PV farm workers with incomes at or below 300% of the federal poverty level. (grant returned)

Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center/Youth Services – $7,000 responsive grant to develop an intensive clean and sober classroom.

Watsonville Family YMCA – $7,000 responsive grant for after-school athletic and civic engagement programs.

Watsonville High School Health Careers Academy (Pajaro Valley Unified School District) - $2,000 direct grant for renovation and furnishing of a job preparation classroom.

Watsonville High School (PVUSD), Aptos High School (PVUSD), Cabrillo College, University of California at Santa Cruz – $16,000 in scholarships for Pajaro Valley youth pursuing careers in the health professions.

Farm Workers and Their Families:

Center for Community Advocacy – $15,000 responsive grant to support expansion of their Promotores de Salud program to include indigenous Mexican farm workers.

Family Services Association of the Pajaro Valley – $10,000 responsive grant in support of a project to demystify and provide mental health services to 50 farm worker families.

Youth Resource Bank – $5,000 responsive grant to provide access to health care for 60 children of farm worker families by provision of Healthy Families Premium scholarships.
