will provide after school programs that address healthy eating
and exercise habits for Latinos at low-income housing facilities

to implement the Teen Success Nutrition Series aimed at reducing
obesity and diabetes risk among pregnant and parenting teens.
Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center (Head Start Program) -- $13,000 to implement the Healthy Beginnings Program,
a nutrition and physical activity program for Head Start children
and their families with the goal of preventing childhood obesity
and promoting life long health.
Santa Cruz Office of Education (Watsonville
Community School) - $12,000 to support Martial Arts Fitness at Watsonville
Community School. Martial Arts Fitness blends the philosophies,
movements and practical aspects of the martial arts with the
fundamental principles of fitness, nutrition and physical health.
Second Harvest Food Bank - $10,000 to support the Youth & Low-Income
Families Farmers’ Market Access Project, designed to promote
healthy eating habits among low-income youth and their families
with a special emphasis on fresh, locally grown produce at the
Watsonville Farmers’ Market.
Health Insurance/Coverage & Education on Using the
System
Healthy Kids of Santa Cruz County - $20,000
to provide access to health insurance to children in the Pajaro
Valley who have incomes at or below 300% of the federal poverty
level.
Hospice Caring Project - $5,000 to support the Implementing
Change Initiative to bridge access barriers to end-of-life hospice,
transitions, and grief support by providing effective, culturally
and linguistically appropriate outreach and education to the Latino
community in Santa Cruz County.
Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County - $3,000to institute
a six-week unit “Accessing Health Care” into the
Survival English Curriculum. Students learn vocabulary
and practice such skills as: selecting a non-ER doctor, speaking
to health providers, making an appointment, and more.
Promoting Entry and Advancement in the Health Professions
Watsonville High School Health Careers Academy - $7,000
for enhancement of its program that provides a specialized course
of study for those high school students interested in entering
the health professions.
Aptos High School, Cabrillo College, Pajaro Valley
High School, Watsonville Adult Education, Watsonville High School – $7,000
in scholarships for Pajaro Valley residents pursuing careers
in the health professions.

Life Lab Science Program — $15,280 to support
the Plant It, Grow It, Eat It! program which will work to improve
the health of Pajaro Valley children through the use of school
gardens.
Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes — $2,000
to implement a parent nutrition education program and to evaluate
the nutrition education and produce distribution partnership with
Second Harvest Food Bank.
Pajaro Valley Prevention & Student Assistance — $7,570
to implement the “Super-Savvy Youth” media literacy
project. This project will provide hands-on media literacy
workshops to local youth in order to increase their awareness of
food industry marketing and advertising messages that promote unhealthy
eating and unrealistic body images.
Pajaro Valley Unified School District Healthy Start Program — $2,650
to implement a Diabetes Teen Support Group at Watsonville High
School.

a project that will promote long term healthy eating habits by
educating young people and Pajaro Valley food stamp recipients
about the benefits of purchasing fresh, locally grown fruits and
vegetables at the Watsonville Farmers’ Market.
Strategic Health Communications — $15,000
to support the ENRG Campaign, a comprehensive childhood obesity
prevention campaign utilizing peer education, social marketing,
media, and community events to educate and mobilize teen involvement.
Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County — $10,000
to develop and implement nutrition curriculum in which students
learn the vocabulary and skills to select and prepare healthy food
for their families and reduce the risk of diabetes.

program to decrease the incidence of obesity amongst the farmer

La Manzana Community Resources - $5,575 to implement
a new pilot program that will provide healthy, nutritious afternoon
snacks on a year-round basis to youth at local community program
sites that also participate in the Summer Lunch Program.
