The Evening of Wine and Roses is one of the premier wine tasting events held in Santa Cruz County. The festive annual gathering attracts up to 1,000 business and professional people each year. The event features the tasting and silent auction of fine wines provided by members of the Santa Cruz Mountains Wine Growers Association, the sampling of gourmet hors d’oeuvres provided by local cooks, restaurants and caterers, and the sale of locally grown roses provided by Pajaro Valley growers.

The Trust plans to continue the expansion of its current silent auction of double magnums of wine as well as additional auction items.

Human Race 2008
The Human Race a Success

We would like to send warm thanks to all who supported the Diabetes Health Center (DHC) at the Human Race on May 10.  Many walked and/or ran the 10K along beautiful West Cliff Drive to support the valuable services of the DHC.  This year, we raised approximately $8,500; and money is still coming in!

We would like to give special thanks to Team Jenn Barley Capitola Weight Watchers and the participating students and faculty of Watsonville High School for their time, effort and contributions.  We would not have a successful event without our wonderful volunteers.

Rather Award Recipients:
Kathleen Kilpatrick, MN, ARNP
Healthy Kids Coalition of Santa Cruz County

2008 Rather Award WinnersKathleen Kilpatrick is the recipient of the 2008 Rather Award in the individual category.  She has worked in many diverse settings during her career as a midwife and nurse, but none have given her as much satisfaction as her current role as a leader and advocate for children’s health in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District.  Since 2000, Ms. Kilpatrick has been an active participant in student life at our local schools. She began her career in the District as a school nurse for the new Children’s Resource Center at the César Chávez School, helping to establish the programs that brought health care services to low-income students. Later, in her work with the District’s Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), she coordinated the partnering of Monterey and Santa Cruz County Mental Health representatives to improve the quality and availability of services to students in need.

The Healthy Kids Coalition of Santa Cruz County is being recognized for their commitment to improving the health and well-being of more than 2,000 low-income children throughout Santa Cruz County by providing insurance coverage for their health, dental and vision services.  Since its inception in 2004, Healthy Kids, along with Healthy Families and Medi-Cal, have enrolled over 9,500 children in insured programs.  Healthy Kids is led by the same 14 organizations that first designed and launched the program in 2004, and is a model of community collaboration in Santa Cruz County.

The Community Health Trust created the Phil Rather Award for Leadership in Healthcare in 1999.  The award was inspired by its namesake and first recipient, Phil Rather, whose volunteer leadership in health care spanned more than 30 years in the Pajaro Valley.  The Rather Award recognizes and honors individuals and/or organizations in the community whose contributions of time, effort or funding have helped make a difference in the quality of our community’s health care.

Past recipients of the Rather Award include:

1999    Phil Rather
2000    The DiCicco Family of Watsonville
2001    Dr. Janet Bell

2003    Jorge Sanchez and the Watsonville Community Hospital Service League
